Title: Exploring Rhyming Words
Grade Level: 1st Grade
Objective: - Students will be able to identify and generate rhyming words. - Students will be able to recognize and appreciate the use of rhyming words in poetry and songs.
Materials: - Chart paper - Markers - Rhyming word flashcards - Rhyming word worksheets - Rhyming word picture cards - Rhyming word matching game
Procedure:
- Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what rhyming words are.
- Write the definition of rhyming words on the chart paper: “Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sounds.”
- Show examples of rhyming words on the chart paper, such as cat and hat, dog and frog, etc.
- Engage students in a brief discussion about why rhyming words are important in poetry and songs.
- Rhyming Word Identification (15 minutes):
- Distribute rhyming word flashcards to each student.
- Instruct students to find a partner and take turns showing their flashcards to each other.
- Encourage students to identify and say the rhyming words on their flashcards.
- Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and support as needed.
- Rhyming Word Generation (15 minutes):
- Gather students back together as a whole group.
- Write a simple word on the chart paper, such as “cat.”
- Ask students to brainstorm and share as many rhyming words as they can think of for “cat.”
- Write down their responses on the chart paper.
- Repeat this activity with a few more words, such as “dog,” “hat,” and “frog.”
- Rhyming Word Practice (15 minutes):
- Distribute rhyming word worksheets to each student.
- Instruct students to complete the worksheet by circling the rhyming words for each given word.
