Objectives: -Students will be able to identify the types of clouds that make up a tornado. -Students will be able to explain how tornadoes form and the destruction they can cause. -Students will be able to identify appropriate safety precautions to take in the event of a tornado.

Materials: -Pictures of cumulonimbus clouds -Pictures of destruction caused by tornadoes -Safety guidelines for tornadoes

Introduction: (5 minutes) Begin the lesson by asking students about their experience with tornadoes. Ask them if they’ve seen a tornado or read about one in the news. Talk about how tornadoes can be dangerous and cause destruction.

Explanation: (15 minutes) Explain how tornadoes form by showing students pictures of cumulonimbus clouds, which are the type of cloud that can generate a tornado. Explain how hot and cold air combine to form these clouds and how the mixing of these two types of air creates a rotating column of air. Tell students how this rotating column of air is a tornado. Show pictures of destruction caused by tornadoes to explain the danger of the storm.

Safety Precautions: (15 minutes) Explain the importance of taking safety precautions in the event of a tornado. Show pictures of safety gear, like helmets and flashlights, that can be used in such a situation. Go over basic safety guidelines and emphasize the importance of following these rules. Talk about how people should stay in shelters or low places during during a tornado and how they should stay away from windows and doors.

Practice: (15 minutes) Read safety guidelines with students and then have them answer questions about which items are necessary in the event of a tornado. Divide students into groups and ask them to list safety tips they should take in the event of a tornado.

Conclusion: (5 minutes) Discuss the importance of understanding tornadoes and taking the necessary safety precautions to stay safe. Finish the lesson by reminding students of the importance of following safety laws and guidelines in the event of a tornado.
