Title: What Can You Say?
Grade Level: Kindergarten 2
Objective: - Students will be able to identify and say common greetings and expressions. - Students will practice using appropriate greetings and expressions in different situations.
Materials: - Oxford Book Unit 1 Lesson 1 - Flashcards with greetings and expressions (e.g., hello, goodbye, thank you, please) - Whiteboard and markers - Chart paper and markers - Small mirrors for each student
Procedure:
- Warm-up (5 minutes):
- Greet the students as they enter the classroom and encourage them to respond with a greeting.
- Play a short video or song with greetings and expressions to engage the students and get them excited about the topic.
- Introduction (10 minutes):
- Show the flashcards with different greetings and expressions.
- Ask the students if they know what each card says and encourage them to say the words out loud.
- Write the words on the whiteboard and discuss their meanings.
- Vocabulary Practice (10 minutes):
- Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
- Give each group a set of flashcards.
- In turns, students should pick a card and say the word out loud. Their partner/group members should respond appropriately.
- Rotate the cards among the groups until all students have had a chance to practice.
- Whole Class Activity (15 minutes):
- Write the following situations on chart paper:
- Meeting a friend at the park
- Saying goodbye to a teacher
- Asking for help from a classmate
- Saying thank you to a friend
- Discuss each situation with the students and ask them to suggest appropriate greetings and expressions for each situation.
- Write their suggestions on the chart paper.
- Write the following situations on chart paper:
- Role-Play (15 minutes):
- Divide the class into pairs.
- Assign each pair a situation from the chart paper.
- Give each pair a small mirror.
- In turns, students should practice the role-play using the appropriate greetings and expressions.
- Encourage students to use the mirror to observe their facial expressions and body language while speaking.
- Wrap-up (5 minutes):
- Gather the students in a circle and review the greetings and expressions learned in the lesson.
- Play a quick game of “Simon Says” using the greetings and expressions as commands.
Extension Activity: - Students can create their own mini-dialogues using the greetings and expressions learned in the lesson. They can perform these dialogues in front of the class or record them as audio or video clips.
Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during the activities. - Assess students’ ability to correctly use the greetings and expressions during the role-play activity. - Review students’ mini-dialogues for accuracy and appropriate use of greetings and expressions.
