Title: Lesson Plan - Summary using Somebody Wanted But So Then with a Disney Short

Objective: Students will be able to summarize a Disney short using the Somebody Wanted But So Then strategy and identify the theme of the story.

Materials: - Disney short film (e.g., “Lava” or “Piper”) - Somebody Wanted But So Then chart (one per student) - Chart paper or whiteboard - Markers or whiteboard markers

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever watched a Disney short film and what they enjoy about them.
    • Explain that today, they will be watching a Disney short film and learning a strategy to summarize it effectively.
  2. Pre-Viewing Activity (5 minutes):
    • Distribute the Somebody Wanted But So Then charts to each student.
    • Explain the purpose of the chart, which is to help them summarize the story by identifying the main elements.
    • Model how to fill out the chart using a simple example unrelated to the Disney short film.
  3. Viewing the Disney Short (10 minutes):

  4. Summary Activity (15 minutes):

Assessment: - Observe students’ participation during the whole-class discussion and their ability to identify the theme of the Disney short film. - Review students’ completed Somebody Wanted But So Then charts to assess their understanding of summarizing using this strategy.
