Title: Preparing an Effective CV for IB Students

Objective: By the end of this lesson, IB students will be able to create a well-structured and professional CV that highlights their skills, experiences, and achievements.

Duration: 60 minutes

Materials: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Handouts with CV templates - Sample CVs for reference - Internet access (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Begin the lesson by explaining the importance of a CV in the job application process.
    • Discuss how a well-prepared CV can help students stand out from other candidates.
    • Emphasize that a CV should be tailored to each specific job or opportunity.
  2. Understanding the Structure of a CV (10 minutes)
    • Present the basic sections of a CV: personal information, objective or summary, education, work experience, skills, achievements, and references.
    • Explain the purpose of each section and how they contribute to showcasing the student’s qualifications.
  3. Analyzing Sample CVs (15 minutes)
    • Distribute sample CVs to the students.
    • Ask them to analyze the structure, content, and formatting of the CVs.
    • Encourage students to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each CV.
  4. Identifying Key Skills and Experiences (10 minutes)
    • Engage students in a discussion about their skills, experiences, and achievements.
    • Help them identify the most relevant ones for the job or opportunity they are targeting.
    • Emphasize the importance of quantifying achievements whenever possible.
  5. Creating a CV (15 minutes)
    • Provide students with CV templates or guide them to find suitable templates online.
    • Instruct them to fill in the sections with their personal information, education, work experience, skills, and achievements.
    • Encourage students to use action verbs and concise language to describe their experiences.
  6. Peer Review and Feedback (10 minutes)
    • Pair students up and ask them to exchange their CVs for review.
    • Instruct them to provide constructive feedback on the structure, content, and formatting of each other’s CVs.
    • Encourage students to suggest improvements and offer suggestions for showcasing strengths.
  7. Conclusion and Reflection (5 minutes)
    • Recap the main points covered in the lesson.
    • Ask students to reflect on what they have learned and how they can apply it to their future job applications.
    • Provide additional resources or websites for further exploration.

Extension Activity (optional): - Assign students to research CV writing tips and techniques online. - Ask them to write a reflection on what they have learned and how they can improve their own CVs based on the research.

Assessment: - Assess students’ understanding of the lesson objectives through their active participation in discussions and completion of the CV template. - Evaluate the quality of their CVs based on the structure, content, and formatting.
