Learning Intention: Simple Past Tense - Regular Verbs (Positive - Negative - Questions)

Lesson Content:

  1. Warm-up Activity:
    • Show a picture of a family having a picnic in the park.
    • Ask the students to describe what they see in the picture using the simple past tense. For example, “They ate sandwiches,” “They played games,” etc.
    • Encourage students to use the positive form of the simple past tense.
  2. Introduction:
    • Explain to the students that the simple past tense is used to talk about actions that happened and were completed in the past.
    • Emphasize that regular verbs follow a specific pattern to form the simple past tense by adding “-ed” to the base form of the verb.
  3. Positive Sentences Exercise:
    • Provide a list of regular verbs in their base form (e.g., walk, talk, play, dance, etc.).
    • Ask the students to write sentences in the simple past tense using the given verbs. For example, “I walked to school yesterday,” “She talked to her friend on the phone,” etc.
    • Encourage students to use different subjects (I, you, he/she/it, we, they) and verbs from the list.
  4. Negative Sentences Exercise:
    • Show a picture of a messy room.
    • Ask the students to describe what they see in the picture using negative sentences in the simple past tense. For example, “He didn’t clean his room,” “They didn’t pick up their toys,” etc.
    • Provide cues for the students to form negative sentences using the simple past tense.
  5. Questions Exercise:
    • Display a picture of children playing in a park.
    • Ask the students to create questions using the simple past tense to ask about the activities in the picture. For example, “Did they play soccer?” “Did she swing on the swing?” etc.
    • Provide cues for the students to form questions using the simple past tense.
  6. Picture Description:
    • Show a picture of a birthday party.
    • Ask the students to describe the picture using a combination of positive sentences, negative sentences, and questions in the simple past tense. For example, “They sang happy birthday,” “He didn’t blow out the candles,” “Did they eat cake?” etc.
    • Encourage students to be creative and use a variety of regular verbs in their descriptions.
  7. Wrap-up Activity:
    • Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
    • Give each group a set of picture cards depicting different activities.
    • Ask the students to take turns describing the activities on their cards using the simple past tense. The other group members should guess the activity based on the description.
    • Monitor the groups and provide feedback on their use of the simple past tense.

Note: Throughout the lesson, provide clear explanations and examples of the simple past tense, and encourage students to practice speaking and writing using the target language.
