Learning Intention: Students will understand how to add two-digit numbers within 20.

Materials:

• Whiteboard • Dry erase markers • 20 blocks/manipulatives/counting cubes

Lesson: 1. Begin the lesson by revising previously learned methods of addition with single digit numbers and introduce the language of “adding two-digit numbers”.

  1. Ask the students to discuss (in pairs or small groups) different strategies for adding two-digit numbers.

  2. Use manipulatives such as blocks or cubes to allow the students to explore physical representation of adding two-digit numbers.

  3. As a class, come up with a list of strategies that can be used to add two-digit numbers.

  4. Model several examples of adding two-digit numbers using manipulatives and the whiteboard.

  5. Provide the students with practice worksheet in which they must add two-digit numbers. Work through a few examples as a class.

  6. For assessment, have the students complete a quiz asking them to complete addition problems with two-digit numbers.

  7. Have students talk to a partner and ask questions to ensure understanding.

  8. Summarise the lesson by recapping the strategies for adding two-digit numbers and review the language of two-digit numbers.

  9. Ask the students to explain how the lesson has helped them understand adding two-digit numbers.
