Learning Intention:

Students will be able to correctly multiply a given number by 10, 100, and 1000.

Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Explain why multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000 is important. 2. Identify and apply the multiplication facts for 10, 100, and 1000. 3. Solve multiplication problems that involve these multipliers.

Materials: - Whiteboard - Markers - Worksheets (with multiplication problems)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) - Explain how multiplying is a way of increasing the number of items in a group - e.g. if we have three apples and we multiply by two, we end up with six apples. - Ask the students to give examples of everyday activities that involve multiplication. - Introduce the new topic of multiplication by 10, 100, and 1000. Explain how these multipliers can quickly change the number.

  2. Guided Practice (10 minutes) - On the whiteboard, have a demonstration of multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000 using one or two examples. - Ask the students to identify the product of the individual calculation, as well as the changes when you multiply by 10, 100, and 1000.

  3. Independent Practice (10 minutes) - Hand out individual worksheets for the students to complete. - Have the students work through the questions independently or in pairs, checking the answers as they go.

  4. Closing (3 minutes) - Ask the students to summarise the main rules they have learnt during the lesson. - Invite questions or thoughts from the students. - End the lesson by pointing out the importance of this topic.
