Objective: The students will be able to correctly add 2 digit numbers within 20.
Materials: A whiteboard, small whiteboard markers, erasers
Method:
-
Introduce the students to the concept of adding 2-digit numbers by demonstrating on the board with a simple equation.
-
Have the students practice with simple equations by writing them on their own small whiteboards.
-
Have the students practice by having them come up with their own equations and demonstrating on their whiteboards.
-
As the students are practicing, be sure to provide them with feedback on their answers.
-
After the students have practiced the concept, have the students work together in pairs to work on more challenging equations.
-
After the pairs have finished their equations, have the group discuss the proper way to solve the equations and make sure that each student has a clear understanding of the material.
-
After the teachers is satisfied that each student understands the concept, end the lesson and allow for some free time for the students to practice their skills.
Assessment:
To assess the students, have them complete an assessment at the end of the lesson. This assessment can include some basic equations that they should be able to solve, and then can ask questions such as demonstrating understanding of the concepts by creating their own equations.
Extension:
For students that are able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the concept and would like to learn more, provide extension activities such as challenging them to solve equations involving decimals and larger numbers. This can help to deepen the student’s understanding of the concept.
