Learning Intention: Students will be able to add 2 digit numbers within 20.

Materials: Whiteboard or chalkboard, markers/chalk

Lesson:

  1. Begin by writing the following equation on the board: 19 + __ = 20

  2. Ask students to fill in the blank (answer is 1).

  3. Introduce the concept of adding two digit numbers within 20. Explain that two digit numbers are two numbers added together, such as 10 + 8 = 18.

  4. Give students practice problems to work on to better their understanding of the concept. Make sure to provide examples and check students’ understanding of the concept.

  5. Have the students create ten examples of two digit numbers and use whiteboards or a chalkboard to record their answers. You may have them work in pairs or individually.

  6. Go over the answers as a class, and discuss errors or mistakes that had been made.

  7. As a wrap up, ask the students to come up with ways to remember how to add two digit numbers within 20.

  8. Provide each student a copy of a practice worksheet and assign for completion.
