LESSON:

Subject: Math Topic: Adding two digit numbers within 40

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to add two digit numbers within 40.

Materials: Whiteboard, dry erase markers, projective surface.

Warm Up (5 minutes)

Select two students to come to the board and solve the following problem: 19+20=

Hook (5 minutes)

Introduce the concept of adding two digit numbers within 40. Explain that this is a skill that they will use throughout the lesson and in math problems moving forward.

Teach (10 minutes)

Break the class into smaller groups and allocate each group with a whiteboard and marker for independent practice. Provide a model for the students on how to solve two digit addition problems. Explain the steps, how to begin and finish the problem, and any clues or shortcuts to use when adding two digit numbers.

Process (10 minutes)

Once students have had a chance to practice with the model explain the concept, allow students to work individually or in partners to solve two-digit addition problems using their allocated whiteboards. Provide assistance to students as needed.

Assessment (10 minutes)

Display a two-digit addition equation on the projected surface. Ask students to individually solve the problem on their whiteboards. Have a few of the students who are most confident with the concept come up to the projected surface to explain why they think their answer is correct.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

Gather the students to the front of the classroom. Ask the students to explain what they have learned, review any key concepts or steps that they have learned, and remind them of the rules when they are solving addition problems. Ask the students if they think they can use this concept when they encounter future addition problems.

End the lesson by asking the students what they learned in the lesson and have the students create a mnemonic to help them remember the steps to solve two digit addition problems.
