Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two digit numbers within 20.
Materials Needed: Whiteboard, markers
Lesson:
-
Begin by reviewing one-digit addition. Ask students to write a few equations such as 8+5, 4+7, etc. on the whiteboard. Once they’re all done, have everyone call out the solutions.
-
After the one-digit additions have been reviewed, introduce two-digit addition. Ask students if they remember the key rule for adding two digit numbers together. (If the sum of the two numbers is greater than 10, the “tens” column will be increased by one.)
-
Start off with an example. Ask students to add 12 + 7 on the whiteboard. As they write the equation, point out the “tens” column and remind them of the key rule. Once they’re done, ask them to call out the answer.
-
Now, it’s time for the students to practice. Ask them to write a few two-digit addition equations on the whiteboard within 20. Let them work in groups or individually. As they’re solving the equations, walk around the room and provide assistance if needed.
-
Once students have finished with the addition problems, have them call out their solutions.
-
As a conclusion to the lesson, have the students summarize the key rule for two-digit addition and provide an example.
-
Finally, provide students with some independent practice. Give them a few two-digit addition problems to complete within 20.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to correctly solve two-digit addition problems within 20.
