Learning Intention:

Students will be able to add two digit numbers within 20.

Materials Needed: - Two sets of number cards (0-20) - Whiteboard or chalkboard

Lesson Plan:

  1. Introduce the lesson by giving a brief explanation of how addition works (e.g. adding two numbers together to get a total).

  2. Pass out two number cards to each student. Model on the whiteboard or chalkboard how to add two digit numbers (e.g. 8 + 6 = 14).

  3. Ask the students to look at the two cards they were given and tell you the sum. If a student is struggling, provide support to help them answer the question.

  4. Once the students are comfortable with the concept, ask them to write down the equation and solve it (e.g. 8 + 6 = 14). Repeat this step with different numbers and work with students that need assistance.

  5. For students who are ready for more of a challenge, begin to introduce more advanced concepts such as borrowing and carrying numbers (e.g. 17 + 4 = 21).

  6. Assign a few practice questions for the students to complete on their own.

  7. Summarize the lesson by asking the students to display their understanding of adding two digit numbers within 20.

Conclusion:

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to confidently add two digit numbers within 20 and be able to use methods such as borrowing and carrying.
