Time Frame - 40 minutes

Materials - - whiteboard or chalkboard - markers or chalk - popsicle sticks or some other item to create a space spinner - identifying numbers worksheet - Addition worksheet with numbers up to 20

Objectives: - Students will be able to identify the numbers between 0 and 20. - Students will be able to add two digit numbers within 20.

Instructions:

  1. Begin the lesson by introducing the learning intention: Today we are learning how to add two digit numbers within 20.

  2. Ask the students to identify the numbers 0-20 as a whole class. Encourage them to count on their own and then call each number out in order until they get to 20.

  3. Provide each student with a set of popsicle sticks or some other item to create a space spinner. Show them how to create the spinner and explain that each time the spinner lands on a number, that number is the number they will need to add.

  4. Pass out the number identification worksheet and have the students complete it independently. Monitor the students and provide feedback and guidance as needed.

  5. Once the students are done with the worksheet, have them move on to the addition worksheet. Show them how to add the two numbers together using the space spinner as an example. Ask them to complete the worksheet independently. Monitor the students and provide feedback and guidance as needed.

  6. Once the students are done with the worksheets, answer any questions they might have and wrap up the lesson by talking about any strategies they used to help them add the numbers together.

  7. Assess the students understanding by asking them to show their work and explain their answers.
