Learning Intention: Students will be able to efficiently add two-digit numbers together, where the sum is less than or equal to 20.
Materials: Individual whiteboards and dry erase markers, 10x10 Hundreds Chart
Procedure:
-
Begin by showing the students the Hundreds Chart on the board and ask them how we can use it to assist us in problem solving. (Allow for student responses)
-
After the students explain what they observe, explain to them how to use the Hundreds Chart to add two-digit numbers together. Specifically, describe how they can break down the numbers they’re adding and visualise them on the chart - the tens digit in one row and the ones digit in another. Give an example such as 17 + 5.
-
Once students understand the concept, ask them to complete an example on their whiteboard and hold it up. Walk around the classroom and check student work.
-
Now distribute individual whiteboards and dry erase markers and direct students to complete the remaining independent tasks on their boards. Give the students time to complete their tasks and walk around the classroom as they work.
-
Once students have completed their tasks, have them hold up their whiteboards and compare answers.
-
Summarise the lesson by explaining how using a Hundreds Chart can be a strategic tool in solving two-digit addition problems.
