Objective:

The student will be able to add 2 digit numbers within 20.

Materials:

· Pencils · Paper · Scissors · A number line

Lesson:

  1. Start by introducing the concept of adding two digit numbers within 20. Give students a few examples to try, like 15 + 7 or 14 + 6. Write the equation on the board and have students write it down in their notebook.

  2. Discuss different strategies students can use to add two digit numbers. Show students how to “count on” to solve for the answer. For example, 15 + 7 can be solved by counting on from 15 to 20 and then continuing on to 27. Write this down in their notebook as well.

  3. Once students have learned the basics of adding two digit numbers, introduce the concept of using a number line. Demonstrate how to use the number line to add two digit numbers. Show students that they can draw the number line on their own paper and write the equation above it. Again, have students practice this a few times.

  4. Give students a few worksheets of two digit numbers to practice. Have the students work independently to solve for the answers. Monitor the students and provide assistance where needed.

  5. Once students have finished the worksheets, have a class discussion. Ask students to share their strategies for solving the equations. Now is a good time to discuss any mistakes that were made during the practice problems.

  6. As a closing activity, have students write two equations on a piece of paper and draw a number line to solve. Have each student present their equations and their solutions to the class.
