Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two digit numbers within 20.

Materials Needed: Dry erase boards, whiteboard markers, worksheets

Lesson:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes): Introduce the lesson by reviewing the key skill of addition. Discuss and explain why addition is important and how it can be used in daily life.

  2. Guided Practice (15 minutes): Start by demonstrating how to solve two digit addition problems using a whiteboard and markers. Ask the students to solve a given problem. Once they’ve completed it, lead them through the steps of breaking down the two digit numbers into ones and tens, and then adding them up, including carrying over the ten when necessary. Have the students work on a couple of other problems in pairs.

  3. Independent Practice (20 minutes): Next, provide students with worksheets of two digit addition problems within 20. Monitor students as they complete them. Encourage students during the worksheet and if needed, provide support and guidance.

  4. Review (10 minutes): Once students are done, have them share how they solved each problem and how they know if the answer is correct. Review key information about two digit addition, such as what it is and when to carry a one over.

  5. Closing (5 minutes): End class by asking the students to summarize what they learned, such as what addition is and how to solve two digit addition problems with the help of carrying over the ten. Congratulate students on a job well done!

Assessment: Assess student performance on the worksheet. Based on the handed in worksheets, it will be determined how well the learning goal has been achieved.
