Learning Intention: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to add two digit numbers within 20 fluently.
Materials: two-sided worksheets for each student, whiteboard and markers
Hook: Writing a story on the whiteboard
Once upon a time in the Land of Maths, there was a giant who had to carry a very heavy sack of apples. But the giant had a problem. He had to separate the apples into two baskets of equal sizes, but he had no way of counting.
Suddenly, a magical fairy appeared out of thin air. The fairy offered the giant help. She waved her magical wand and the three digit number 20 suddenly appeared in the sky.
The fairy said: “Use this number to add two digit numbers and the giant will be able to figure out how many apples he needs to put in each basket.”
Introduction: Explain why we are learning this
Today we are going to be learning how to add two digit numbers within 20. This is a very important skill because it is the foundation for all other types of math. Knowing how to add two digit numbers will help us when it comes to solving more complex math problems.
Guided Practice: Demonstrate, model and practice with students
Let’s take a look at the number 20. This number is a two digit number, so to add it, we will need to break it down. We can break it down into 10 + 10, or 12 + 8.
Now, let’s practice together. I am going to give you a few problems, and you will write down the answer on your worksheet.
-
15 + 5
-
11 + 9
-
17 + 3
Independent Practice: Let students practice on their own
Now that you have seen how to do it and gone through some practice together, it’s time to do some independent practice. On your worksheet, I have written down a few more problems for you to try.
When you have finished, go over your answers with your partner.
Review: Check understanding
Let’s review what we have learned today. Who can tell me what we learned? (students answer)
That’s right, we learned how to add two digit numbers within 20. Can anyone give me an example of how to do that? (students answer)
Very good! I can see you all understand how to add two digit numbers within 20.
