Learning Intention: To be able to add two digit numbers within 20

Materials: Worksheet, markers/crayons

Lesson Plan:

Warm-up (5 mins): Bring students together for a whole group discussion about what it means to add two numbers. Encourage students to share their understanding and ask questions.

Practice (30 mins): Explain to students that the goal is to be able to add two-digit numbers within 20. To help introduce the content and practice the concept, hand out the worksheet (an exercise in which students have to find the missing numbers to complete the equation). Ask students to arrange themselves in small groups and get the markers/crayons ready. Pass the worksheets out to each group one by one and point out the instructions for completing the exercises. Ask each group to work together to come up with their answers.

Once all the exercises have been done, get the whole class together and ask each group to come up to the board and explain their answers. During this period, have the other students listen to each other’s explanations and ask questions if they need further clarification.

Conclusion (2 mins): Bring the whole class back together and explain to the students that they have all the necessary skills to add two digit numbers within 20. Encourage them to continue practicing this skill and ask any further questions they may have.
