Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two 2-digit numbers within 20.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to write a 2-digit number and represent it with 2 expanded form digit cards.
- Students will be able to identify the different components of two 2-digit numbers (tens and ones).
- Students will be able to add two 2-digit numbers together and find the sum.
Materials:
- Whiteboard
- Markers/Pencils
- Digit cards/paper
Procedure:
-
Begin the lesson by writing the learning intention on the whiteboard.
-
Ask the students to explain what it is helpful to add two digit numbers.
-
Introduce expand form as a helpful tool for adding two digit numbers. Explain that each digit card or piece of paper represents a particular number of ten or ones.
-
Model the process of adding two 2-digit numbers using the digit cards or paper. For example, have 2 cards that represent the numbers 12 and 16. Show the students that 12 is composed of 1 ten and 2 ones. Ask them to identify the value of 16 with 2 tens and 6 ones. Show the students the addition sentence 12 + 16 = 28 and the expanded form 10 + 2 + 10 + 6 = 28 and explain the process of adding the two numbers together.
-
Have the students work in pairs or with partners to practice adding two 2-digit numbers within 20. Provide them with the digit cards or paper if needed.
-
Ask the students to share their answers and provide feedback and corrections when needed.
-
Have several students come to the whiteboard and solve a few problems together.
-
Review the lesson by asking the students to summarize the lesson and explain what will help them to add two 2-digit numbers together.
