Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two 2-digit numbers within 20.

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to write a 2-digit number and represent it with 2 expanded form digit cards.
  2. Students will be able to identify the different components of two 2-digit numbers (tens and ones).
  3. Students will be able to add two 2-digit numbers together and find the sum.

Materials:

  • Whiteboard
  • Markers/Pencils
  • Digit cards/paper

Procedure:

  1. Begin the lesson by writing the learning intention on the whiteboard.

  2. Ask the students to explain what it is helpful to add two digit numbers.

  3. Introduce expand form as a helpful tool for adding two digit numbers. Explain that each digit card or piece of paper represents a particular number of ten or ones.

  4. Model the process of adding two 2-digit numbers using the digit cards or paper. For example, have 2 cards that represent the numbers 12 and 16. Show the students that 12 is composed of 1 ten and 2 ones. Ask them to identify the value of 16 with 2 tens and 6 ones. Show the students the addition sentence 12 + 16 = 28 and the expanded form 10 + 2 + 10 + 6 = 28 and explain the process of adding the two numbers together.

  5. Have the students work in pairs or with partners to practice adding two 2-digit numbers within 20. Provide them with the digit cards or paper if needed.

  6. Ask the students to share their answers and provide feedback and corrections when needed.

  7. Have several students come to the whiteboard and solve a few problems together.

  8. Review the lesson by asking the students to summarize the lesson and explain what will help them to add two 2-digit numbers together.
