Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two-digit numbers within 20.

Materials Needed: Whiteboard, marker, and worksheets

Lesson:

  1. Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of adding two digits together. Explain that this time we will be adding two digits together that can range from 0-20.

  2. Then draw two circles on the whiteboard and label each one “number 1” and “number 2”. Model a problem to the students using the circle diagrams.

  3. Assign students to their own worksheets and have them complete the problems independently.

  4. After students have finished or worked diligently on the worksheets, gather the students together and have them share their solutions to the problems.

  5. After the students have shared their solutions, ask them questions to check their understanding such as, “What does the plus sign mean?” “What number did you add first?”

  6. Lastly, review the lesson by having the students summarize what they learned.

  7. End the lesson by reviewing the learning objective.
