Lesson Plan:
-
Introduction (10 minutes): Today’s lesson is about adding two-digit numbers within 20. Does anyone know what two-digit numbers are? (Allow students to answer.) Two-digit numbers are any numbers that have two numbers in them. For example, 19, 20, 15, etc.
-
Guided Practice (15 minutes):
Now let’s work on some problems together to help you understand adding two-digit numbers within 20. I will guide you along and make sure everyone understands the process.
On the board, write the following problem: 15 + 4 =
Discuss the process step-by-step with the students: Start with the ones column. 4 ones added to 5 ones equals 9 ones. Then, move to the tens column. Since there is no 10 in 4, we don’t have to carry a one over.
Now work with the students to solve a few more examples on the board:
19 + 1 =
17 + 3 =
Discuss the process with the students as you go.
- Independent Practice (20 minutes):
Now it’s time to practice on your own. Work on the practice sheet I provided. It’s important to take your time and think carefully before solving each problem. If you have any questions, please raise your hand and I’ll come help.
- Assessment (5 minutes):
Now, answer the questions on the other side of the practice sheet. Check your answers with the answer key provided to make sure you understand the process.
