Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two-digit numbers within 20.

Materials: One handout per student containing two-digit numbers within 20, 10 laminated cards with two-digit numbers within 20

Procedure

  1. Begin by introducing and reviewing basic addition concepts. Have the students identify the key words and parts associated with addition such as: sum, addend, and augend.

  2. Explain to the students that they will be working with two-digit numbers within 20 and how to add them.

  3. Pass out one handout per student containing two-digit numbers within 20. Ask the students to write down the answer for each equation on the handout.

  4. Ask the students to form small groups and provide each group with the set of 10 laminated cards, each containing two-digit numbers within 20.

  5. Explain the task to the students. They will use the cards to create and solve equations. Give an example, such as ‘If I have a card with 15 plus a card with 7, how much is the sum?’.

  6. Allow the students time to create and solve equations with the cards.

  7. Make sure to have the students draw equations and write out the numbers to show their work.

  8. Ask each group to present their equations to the class and have the class then discuss their solutions.

  9. Finally, have the students discuss other strategies they discovered to solve their equations.

Conclusion

Ask the students to reflect on the lesson:What strategies did they use to solve the equations? What was easy? What was challenging? What else do they need to practice?
