Learning Intention: Students will be able to add two-digit numbers within 20 accurately.

Objectives: -Students will be able to use the traditional pencil and paper method to add two-digit numbers within 20. -Students will be able to explain the steps of their procedure.

Materials: -Pencils -Paper

Introduction: Welcome students to today’s lesson and explain to them the learning intention. Then explain the importance of knowing how to quickly and accurately add two-digit numbers within 20 as it prepares them for more complex mathematics in the future.

Activity One: Write two-digit equations on the board that have answers within 20 (e.g. 19 + 13). Ask students to raise their hands with the answer, then explain how they got to the answer. Ask students to join you in counting up from 19 + 13 = 32, to help them understand the process you’ve just gone through.

Activity Two: Break the students into pairs and provide them with paper and pencils. Explain that each pair must solve five equations. Then ask them to come up with their own equations to solve (e.g. 17 + 18). Ask students to check their answers with their partner before exchanging equations and checking each other’s answers.

Activity Three: Introduce the students to the concept of carrying. Solve an example equation on the board, such as 15 + 17 = 32. Draw a line between the digits and explain to the students that when the sum of the two digits is more than 10, you need to ‘carry’ the extra digit to the next column. Then solve 16 + 18 on the board.

Conclusion: Review the steps to solve two-digit equations with the students. Ask them if they have any questions, and reiterate the importance of understanding how to add two-digit numbers within 20.
