Learning Intention: Comparing the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes to the song “Dear Mama” by Tupac Shakur

  1. Play “Dear Mama” by Tupac Shakur for the class. Ask students to identify the figurative language used in the song. Discuss the theme of the song and what message Tupac is trying to convey to his mother.

  2. Have students work in pairs or small groups to compare and contrast the two pieces of literature. Provide them with a Venn diagram or graphic organizer to help them organize their thoughts. Encourage them to consider the following questions: - How are the messages similar or different? - How do the authors use figurative language to convey their message? - How do the authors use tone and mood to convey their message? - How do the authors use imagery to convey their message?

  3. Have each group share their findings with the class. Encourage students to respectfully listen to each other’s ideas and opinions.

Conclusion: Wrap up the lesson by asking students to reflect on what they learned about the relationship between a mother and her child. Ask them to share one thing they will remember from the lesson and how they can apply it to their own lives. Remind them that even when we don’t understand our mother’s advice or guidance, it often comes from a place of love and experience.
