Learning Intention: Students will be able to understand conditions for and demonstrate fair use of images taken from the internet.

Objectives: • Upon completion of the lesson, students will be able to define the term ‘fair use’ • Students will be able to list and explain conditions of fair use of images on the internet • Students will be able to assess the appropriateness of using an image found on the internet

Materials: • Slides with explanations of fair use • Slides with images and copyright information • Handouts summarizing fair use conditions

Procedures: 1. Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about fair use. Facilitate a discussion and record their thoughts on the board. 2. Introduce the concept of fair use. Explain that fair use is a legal doctrine that allows for limited and reasonable use of copyrighted materials without permission from the copyright holder. 3. Show slides to illustrate fair use. Explain that these conditions are used to assess the appropriateness of use. 4. Provide students with knowledge checks. Show images that students can evaluate by determining whether or not it would be considered fair use. 5. Discuss the results and make sure students understand why some images can or cannot be used in certain situations. 6. Summarize the lesson with a handout that outlines the conditions of fair use.

Assessment: The students will be assessed on their understanding of fair use by completing an assessment activity. The activity will involve evaluating a set of images to determine whether or not their use is an appropriate example of fair use.
