Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define fair use of materials from the Internet
- Explain why it is important to credit the original content creator
- Identify strategies for avoiding plagiarism when using online sources
Materials:
• Access to the Internet • PowerPoint presentation with information on fair use and plagiarism • Worksheet with practice questions and scenarios
Introductory Activity (5 minutes):
Ask students to write down two examples of things they take from the Internet, such as funny pictures or quotes, and how they use them.
Direct Instruction (20 minutes):
Explain the concept of fair use, which includes the right to copy, distribute, or perform certain copyrighted materials under specific conditions. Also, explain that fair use is often concerned with education, such as allowing teachers to use portions of copyrighted material for educational purposes. Show the PowerPoint presentation with information about fair use and plagiarism and discuss the different points.
Guided Practice (15 minutes):
Distribute the worksheet with practice questions and scenarios and have students answer them. Discuss the answers as a class.
Closing Activity (5 minutes):
Have students take a few minutes to write a summary of what they’ve learned in the lesson.
Assessment:
Collect the summaries from the closing activity to assess student understanding of the material.
