Learning intention: Learners will be able to interpret graphs in terms of the relationship between dependent and independent variables

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes) A. Review the concepts of dependent and independent variables B. Explain the purpose of this lesson

  2. Activity 1 (15 minutes) A. Have learners view a graph and discuss what they think the independent and dependent variables are B. Once learners have identified the variables, ask them to identify the type of relationship to be found on the graph (e.g. linear, quadratic, etc.)

  3. Activity 2 (15 minutes) A. Divide the class into small groups. B. Give each group a different graph with the independent and dependent variables already identified C. Ask the groups to explain the type of relationship they see on the graph (e.g. linear, quadratic, etc.).

  4. Summary (5 minutes) A. Have the groups present their findings to the class. B. Review the concepts of dependent and independent variables and the different types of relationships seen in graphs.

  5. Assessment (5 minutes) A. Give learners a worksheet with multiple graphs. B. Ask them to identify the independent and dependent variables and the type of relationship found on each graph.
