Learning Intention: Students will learn better diet practices for high protein eating.

Objectives: • Identify and explain the importance of high protein in an overall balanced diet • List sources of high protein food and identify recommended daily protein intake • Explain steps to make intentional dining decisions when eating high protein meals

Anticipatory Set (Introduction): “Good morning! Today we’re going to be talking about better diet practices for high protein eating. Who here can tell me what foods are considered high in protein?”

(Give students a few responses to the question and then explain the importance of high protein in an overall balanced diet and list sources of high protein food. Additionally, offer students the recommended daily protein intake.)

Instruction and Guided Practice: “Now that we know what protein is and where to find it let’s talk about how to make intentional dining decisions when you’re eating a high protein meal. All of our dietary choices have an impact on our health, so it’s important to think about the foods we’re putting on our plate. Make sure you’re getting both complex and simple carbohydrates, good fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables with your protein.

Let’s practice making a healthy high protein meal. We’ll start by selecting a lean protein. Some examples would be grilled chicken, beans, fish, eggs, greek yogurt, and tofu. Once you’ve selected your protein, add in some complex carbs like brown rice, quinoa, sweet potato, or lentils. Then, add in lots of fruits and vegetables. Finally, top it off with a few healthy fats, like olive oil, avocados, nuts, or seeds.

Now it’s your turn! Who would like to take a crack at creating a healthy high protein meal?”

(Choose one or two students to demonstrate, giving others time to think about their choices.)

Closing/Assessment: “Great job everyone! You now have the skills and knowledge to make an intentional and balanced meal that is high in protein. You don’t have to sacrifice flavor or nutrition when you’re eating high protein meals, and now you know how to do it the healthy way.”

(Perform quick assessments - oral quizzes, written quizzes, etc.)
