Lesson 11: Changing Shadows

Learning Intention: To understand how shadows change when an object is moved closer or further away from a light source.

Introduction: 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students what they think will happen to a shadow when they put an object close to a light source and when they move it further away. 2. Allow the students to share their ideas and discuss their predictions as a class.

Main Activity: 1. Distribute the comic strip planner to each student and explain that they will be conducting an experiment to explore how shadows change. 2. Discuss the experiment with the students and guide them in filling out the planner, including their prediction of what will happen to the shadow when the object is moved closer or further away from the light source. 3. Provide torches and instruct the students to find opaque objects around the classroom for their experiment. 4. Allow the students to experiment with the torches and objects, moving the objects closer and further away from the light source. 5. Encourage the students to record their findings by either writing or drawing them on their comic strip planner.

Resources: - Torch (one per student or small group) - Comic strip planner (one per student) - Classroom objects (let the students pick their own)

Conclusion: 1. Gather the students back together as a class and discuss their findings. 2. Ask the students if their predictions were correct and if they noticed any patterns or changes in the shadows. 3. Summarize the lesson by emphasizing that shadows change in size and shape when an object is moved closer or further away from a light source. 4. Encourage the students to reflect on what they have learned and how they can apply this knowledge in other situations.

Extension: 1. Challenge the students to create a comic strip or poster illustrating the concept of changing shadows. 2. Have the students present their creations to the class, explaining the changes they observed and the importance of understanding shadows in everyday life.
