- Types of Maps (15 minutes)

- Ask students to observe the maps and identify any differences they notice.
- Discuss the different types of maps, such as political maps, physical maps, topographic maps, climate maps, road maps, etc.
- Provide brief explanations and examples of each type of map.
- Distribute printed copies of various types of maps to small groups of students.
- In their groups, ask students to examine the maps and discuss the unique features and purposes of each type.
- Afterward, have each group share their findings with the class.
- Parts of a Map (20 minutes)
- Introduce the key components of a map: title, legend/key, scale, compass rose, and symbols.
- Explain the purpose of each component and how it helps us understand the information presented on a map.
- Draw a simple map on the whiteboard or chart paper, leaving out the components.
- Ask students to suggest what should be included in the map to make it complete.
- As a class, add the missing components to the map, labeling and explaining each one.
- Distribute blank sheets of paper to students and ask them to create their own map of a familiar place (e.g., their neighborhood, school, etc.).
- Instruct students to include all the key components discussed earlier.
- Encourage students to use colored pencils or markers to make their maps visually appealing.
- Allow time for students to complete their maps.
- Optional: Students can share their maps with the class and explain the key components they included.
- Conclusion (5 minutes)
