Learning Intention: Understand the denominators of unit fractions
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the denominator of common unit fractions.
Materials: Whiteboard, whiteboard marker, fraction tiles, fraction number lines
Procedure:
-
Introduce the topic by writing the learning intention on the board - “Understand the denominators of unit fractions”. Explain what a unit fraction is and how it is defined.
-
Have the students create a fraction number line using the fraction tiles. Explain that the denominators of unit fractions will always be the number of parts on the fraction number line.
-
As a class, name common unit fractions and their denominators. Discuss why the denominators of unit fractions are always whole numbers.
-
Check for understanding by using an analogy with a pizza: explain that unit fractions are like slices of pizza and the denominator of a unit fraction is equivalent to the total number of slices.
-
Hand out fraction number lines and have the students fill it in with the different unit fractions and their denominators.
-
Have students complete a worksheet or a written exercise to check their understanding.
-
Wrap up the lesson by having a discussion about the importance of understanding unit fractions and denominators.
