Title: Building Resilience with Pete the Cat

Age Group: Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Objective: To help children develop resilience and a growth mindset through the story of Pete the Cat.

Resources:

  • Pete the Cat book by James Dean and Eric Litwin
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Paper and pencils
  • Pete the Cat coloring sheets
  • Playdough

Introduction (10 minutes):

  • Gather the children in a circle and introduce the book Pete the Cat.
  • Ask the children if they have ever faced a difficult situation or challenge. Encourage them to share their experiences.
  • Explain that today, we will be learning about resilience and how to overcome challenges just like Pete the Cat.

Main Activity (30 minutes):

  • Read the story of Pete the Cat to the children, stopping at key points to ask questions and encourage discussion.
  • After reading the story, ask the children to think about how Pete the Cat showed resilience throughout the story. Write their ideas on the whiteboard.
  • Discuss with the children how they can show resilience in their own lives. Encourage them to share their ideas and write them on the whiteboard.
  • Give each child a Pete the Cat coloring sheet and ask them to color it in. While they are coloring, ask them to think about a challenge they have faced and how they can show resilience in that situation.
  • After they have finished coloring, ask the children to share their thoughts with the group.

Extension Activity (20 minutes):

  • Give each child a small ball of playdough and ask them to create something that represents resilience to them.
  • Encourage the children to share their creations with the group and explain why they chose to make that particular object.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

  • Recap the main points of the lesson, emphasizing the importance of resilience and a growth mindset.
  • Ask the children to share one thing they have learned about resilience today.
  • End the lesson with a positive message, such as “Remember, just like Pete the Cat, we can overcome any challenge if we keep trying and never give up!”
