One fun and engaging music-related ESL activity for kids is “Musical Chairs Vocabulary.” Here’s how to play:
-
Prepare flashcards with different vocabulary words related to music (e.g., instruments, musical genres, musical terms, etc.). Make sure you have one flashcard per student, and place them face down in a circle.
-
Set up chairs in a circle, with one less chair than the number of students.
-
Play some music and have the students walk around the chairs in a circle.
-
When the music stops, each student must quickly find a chair to sit on. The student who doesn’t find a chair is out for that round.
-
Once a student is out, they must pick up a flashcard from the pile and read the word aloud. If they can’t read it, they can ask for help from the other students.
-
Repeat steps 3-5 until there is only one student left. This student is the winner!
This activity not only helps students practice their vocabulary, but it also encourages listening skills and quick thinking. You can adapt the game by using different categories of vocabulary or by adding more challenging elements, such as having students use the word in a sentence before they can sit down.
