Timeframe: 60 minutes
Introduction (5 minutes): Introduce yourself and invite the students to participate in a fun and fast paced tag rugby lesson. Explain the focus of today’s lesson is to get familiar with the rules, techniques and strategies that they will need to understand the game of tag rugby.
Rules (15 minutes): Explain the basic rules of tag rugby, including the following to the students: - Tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby. Players must stay 1 meter away from each other while they are playing. - Each team is made up of 7 players. - Each team can score a try (the ball must be touched down in the opponents in-goal zone in a controlled manner) during a game of tag rugby. - Six tackles is the number of consecutive tackles allowed for each team. After this, the player must pass the ball laterally or backwards to a team mate
Demonstration (15 minutes): Demonstrate how a player should run with a tag rugby ball. Emphasize the need to protect the ball using two hands and to stay 1 meter away from other players. Next, demonstrate how players should pass the ball to a team mate - the ball must be an overarm pass that travels straight and accurately to the intended receiver.
Practice (15 minutes): Divide the students into two teams. Each team should have a captain who is responsible for assigning players to teams. Provide each student with a tag rugby ball and a tag rugby belt. Set up cones for the teams to use as goal posts. Begin by getting the students to practice running and passing with the tag rugby balls, allowing them to get used to the equipment.
Evaluation (10 minutes): Have a game of tag rugby between the teams. Allow the students to apply the rules they have learned and demonstrate their understanding of tag rugby strategies.
Conclusion (5 minutes): Reflect on the lesson and ensure that all students have a clear understanding of the rules and strategies needed to play tag rugby. Ask the students to summarize some key points, such as the need to protect the ball and pass the ball accurately.
