Objective: Layla will be able to identify and name the different phonemes in the English language

Materials: -Phonics charts -Example words -Pens/paper for writing activities

Procedure: 1. Introduction to phonics: Explain that phonics is a way of teaching reading and writing and that it is based on the sounds the letters make.

  1. Introduce the Chart: Show Layla the phonics chart and explain what the symbols mean. Talk about each sound and how it is represented.

  2. Practice: Give Layla an example word and have her write it on the paper. Then have her circle, or point to the letters that represent. Ask her which sound the letters make. Repeat with more words.

  3. Spelling: Give Layla certain sounds and have her think of a word that uses those sounds. Have her spell the word on paper and then check the spelling for accuracy.

  4. Reading: Give Layla a list of sight words and have her read them out loud.

  5. Closing: Review with Layla the different phonemes and have her explain how phonemes help us read and write words.
