Lesson Plan

Objective: By the end of this lesson, Layla will be able to identify the most common phonemes (sounds) of the English language.

Materials: - Primary Education Phonics chart - Flash cards with pictures of objects

Procedure:

  1. Introduction to Phonics (5 mins) - Explain to Layla what phonics are: the process of recognizing words by the sounds they make - Introduce the phonics chart, explaining that it is organized by different sounds of the English language

  2. Review (5 mins) - Have Layla practice saying the different phonemes on the chart

  3. Activity (10 mins) - Lay out the flash cards with the pictures of objects and have Layla practice blending the sounds together to spell out and recognize the words

  4. Conclusion (5 mins) - Have a brief review of what Layla has learned - Ask Layla to name an object from the flash cards and ask her to spell it out using the phonemic sounds.

After wrapping up the lesson, Layla will have a better understanding of the English language phonetic rules.
