Goals: • Introduce Numicon to the class • Introduce the Equals Symbol • Introduce Number Bonds to 10

  1. Begin the lesson by introducing Numicon to the class and briefly explain how each shape has its own value.

  2. On the board, draw the equals sign and explain what it means.

  3. Give a brief discussion on number bonds and explain that they are used to find the total when two numbers are added together.

  4. Use Numicon to illustrate several examples of number bonds to 10.

  5. Allow time for the pupils to work in pairs to figure out some number bonds using Numicon.

Lesson 2: Number Bonds Up to 10

Goals: • Work with a partner to find missing numbers to form bonds to 10 • Introduce the idea that the total of two number bonds is 10

  1. Begin by reviewing the equals sign and what it means.

  2. Explain that students will be working in pairs to form number bonds to 10.

  3. Give each pair of students Numicon pieces and ask them to construct several number bonds to 10.

  4. Allow students to move around the room to find their missing pieces that make 10.

  5. As students finish, encourage them to switch partners and explore different bonds.

Lesson 3: Number Bonds to 10 with Counters

Goals: • Introduce counters as a tool to create bonds to 10 • Discuss various missing numbers needed to create bonds to 10

  1. Begin by reviewing the equals sign and number bonds to 10.

  2. Introduce the use of counters, explaining how they can help us find the missing number in a number bond.

  3. Give each pair of students five counters and have them create a number bond to 10 using their counters.

  4. As they finish, have them discuss their missing numbers and encourage them to come up with various missing numbers needed to create a number bond to 10.

  5. Repeat the activity using other counters if needed.
