Materials Needed: -Tag Rugby Balls -Marker Cones -Player Bibs

Objectives: -Introduce tag rugby and explain the rules of the game -Practice passing and passing techniques -Introduce how tagging is carried out

  1. Start by introducing the game and explain the rules of tag rugby to the class. Explain that it follows the same rules as traditional rugby, but does not involve any contact or tackling.

  2. Divide the class into teams and give each team player bibs. Ask the students to spread out over the area and create two teams.

  3. Set up a grid of cones to simulate a rugby field and explain the roles of each team’s players. Explain the basics of passing a rugby ball, such as keeping the pass low and following through after the ball is released.

  4. Explain how to carry out the tagging action - make sure to emphasise avoiding contact. Demonstrate the tagging technique and ask the students to practise this on each other in small groups before introducing a game situation.

  5. Now it is time to introduce the ball. Introduce basic passing techniques, such as two-handed passes with arms outstretched. Explain the importance of keeping it low, with a straight wrist - practice this with the students until they demonstrate the correct technique.

  6. Introduce a game situation and ask the teams to play tag rugby. Encourage the students to use both hands to pass the ball and to keep the ball away from their opponents, emphasising the importance of tagging rather than tackling.

  7. Finally, ask the teams to play a short game of tag rugby, having a referee if necessary to ensure fair play.

  8. Once the game has finished, talk to the class about the key learning points from the lesson - the importance of tagging rather than tackling, the basic passing techniques and the rules of the game.
