Objective: Students will be able to explain the impacts of population changes on different regions of the world.

Introduction (5 minutes):
Start by asking the student what comes to mind when they hear the term “population changes”? Allow them to answer then explain that changes in population can affect the environment, economy, and social structure of different regions around the world. Tell them that as part of the lesson they will be working in small groups to analyze population changes in different regions of the world.

Activity (20 minutes):
Give each group of students a region of the world. Explain that they should focus their research on the environmental, economic, and social impacts of population changes. Ask the students to use the internet to research for 5 minutes on their selected region.

Once the research is completed, ask the groups to break down their findings into the three categories (environment, economy, and social) and present their findings to the class. If there is extra time, ask the students to think of an example of a region affected by population change. This will allow the students to apply their knowledge to real world situations.

Conclusion (5 minutes):
After each group has finished their presentation, ask them to think back to the question asked at the beginning of the lesson: what came to mind when you heard the term “population changes”? Ask the students if their thinking has changed after researching their region. Then, ask them to identify the common themes among all the regions discussed. Explain that the common themes are the environmental, economic, and social impacts of population changes on different regions of the world.

Finally, wrap up the lesson by asking the students to share any unique facts or stories from their research that stood out to them.
