Objective: Students will be able to spell and recognize split diagraph a-e words.

Materials: Powerpoint presentation with spelling list and images, whiteboard and markers.

Activity: 1. Introduce and explain split diagraph: Show students an example of a split diagraph (a-e word) and explain to them that words with a split diagraph are pronounced differently from words without one. Explain that the “e” makes the “a” sound long, for example, the word “safe” is pronounced as “sayf”.

  1. Go through spelling list: Show students the spelling list on the PowerPoint with images. Go through each word and have the students say the word out loud. After they say the word, they should repeat the word with the long vowel sound (example: sayf).

  2. Game time: Write the words on the whiteboard and assign 1-2 students to erase the words as they spell them out correctly. The students that spell the word correctly first, get to erase the word.

  3. Saying it fast: At the end of the activity, time the students to see how quickly they can say all of the words with the long vowel sound. As a reward for their success, the student with the fastest time can pick out a reward or a special treat.

Closure: Review the diphthong rules and ask questions to see if the students understand. Make sure to emphasize long vowels as the main focus of the lesson and point out that the consonant following the “e” changes the pronunciation of the word.
