Direct Instruction Lesson Plan
Topic: Equivalent Fractions
Objective: Students will be able to identify equivalent fractions and state the methods used to create them.
Materials: Index cards, pencils, whiteboard, markers, worksheets
Procedure:
-
Introduction (10 mins): Ask students to describe what fractions are. Explain that fractions are parts of a whole and that a fraction can be broken down to smaller parts. Discuss what “equivalent fractions” mean and explain that they are fractions that have the same value, even though they may look different.
-
Modeling (15 mins): Draw a large fraction on the whiteboard, such as 2/4. Ask the students to suggest what methods can be used to create an equivalent fraction. Demonstrate creating equivalent fractions by doubling both the numerator and denominator (4/8). By multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same amount, an equivalent fraction is created.
-
Guided Practice (10 mins): Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of index cards. Instruct the groups to make fraction cards on the index cards with each fraction being an equivalent fraction of the first fraction. Once they are finished, have the groups come back together to present their cards and discuss their methods.
-
Independent Practice (5 mins): Pass out the worksheets and have students complete the worksheets independently.
-
Closing (5 mins): To close the lesson, have students write a summary sentence about the lesson. Collect the worksheets for assessment.
Assessment: Collect the worksheets for review and assess the students’ understanding of the concepts.
Completion Time: 45 minutes
