Activity: Adding Numbers Including Peso Money

Objective: To practice adding numbers, including peso money, and reinforce understanding of place value and regrouping.

Materials: - Peso bills and coins (real or play money) - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or chalk - Worksheets or printed number problems (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Begin by reviewing the concept of adding numbers and place value.
    • Explain that today, we will be practicing adding numbers that include peso money.
    • Show the students some peso bills and coins, and briefly discuss their values.
  2. Demonstration (10 minutes):
    • Write a simple addition problem on the whiteboard, such as: 25 pesos + 15 pesos.
    • Explain the steps to solve the problem:
      • Start by adding the pesos (25 + 15 = 40).
      • Then, regroup if necessary. For example, if the sum is greater than 99 pesos, regroup the hundreds place.
    • Model the process of adding the numbers, including the regrouping if needed.
    • Repeat the process with a few more examples, gradually increasing the complexity.
  3. Guided Practice (15 minutes):
    • Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
    • Distribute the peso bills and coins to each group.
    • Provide the groups with a set of addition problems involving peso money.
    • Encourage the students to work together to solve the problems, using the materials and the steps discussed earlier.
    • Circulate around the room, offering assistance and guidance as needed.
  4. Independent Practice (15 minutes):
    • Provide each student with a worksheet or a set of printed number problems.
    • Instruct the students to solve the problems individually, using the skills they have learned.
    • Encourage them to show their work and explain their thinking.
  5. Review and Closure (5 minutes):
    • Gather the students back together as a whole group.
    • Review the steps for adding numbers, including peso money.
    • Ask a few students to share their strategies or solutions to the problems.
    • Summarize the key points and congratulate the students on their efforts.

Extension: - For advanced students, provide more challenging addition problems involving larger amounts of peso money. - Introduce subtraction problems using peso money to further reinforce the concept of regrouping. - Play a game where students take turns drawing addition problems involving peso money and solving them.
