To round whole numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand place, follow these rules:
- Nearest Ten:
- Look at the digit in the ones place.
- If the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, keep the tens digit the same and change all digits to the right to 0.
- If the digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, increase the tens digit by 1 and change all digits to the right to 0.
- Nearest Hundred:
- Look at the digit in the tens place.
- If the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, keep the hundreds digit the same and change all digits to the right to 0.
- If the digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, increase the hundreds digit by 1 and change all digits to the right to 0.
- Nearest Thousand:
- Look at the digit in the hundreds place.
- If the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, keep the thousands digit the same and change all digits to the right to 0.
- If the digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, increase the thousands digit by 1 and change all digits to the right to 0.

- 23 rounds to 20
- 48 rounds to 50
- 75 rounds to 80
- Rounding to the nearest hundred:
- 345 rounds to 300
- 678 rounds to 700
- 912 rounds to 900
- Rounding to the nearest thousand:
- 4,567 rounds to 5,000
- 8,912 rounds to 9,000
- 3,245 rounds to 3,000
