Procedure:
- Engage (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever noticed a key on the keyboard that has an arrow pointing upwards.
- Show them a picture of a keyboard or use an actual keyboard to point out the shift key.
- Ask students if they know what the shift key does or if they have ever used it.
- Explore (10 minutes):
- Explain to students that the shift key is used to capitalize letters.
- Write a simple sentence on the chart paper or whiteboard, such as “i like to play outside.”
- Ask students to read the sentence aloud and discuss why it is not written correctly.
- Demonstrate how to use the shift key to capitalize the first letter of the sentence by holding down the shift key and pressing the letter “I.”
- Ask students to read the sentence again and discuss the difference.
- Explain (10 minutes):
- Discuss with students when it is appropriate to use capital letters, such as at the beginning of a sentence, for proper nouns, and for the pronoun “I.”
- Write examples of each on the chart paper or whiteboard and explain their significance.
- Emphasize that the shift key is used to quickly switch between lowercase and uppercase letters.
- Elaborate (15 minutes):
- Distribute worksheets with sentences for capitalization practice.
- Instruct students to use the shift key to capitalize the appropriate letters in each sentence.
- Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.
- Once students have completed the worksheets, review the answers together as a class.
- Evaluate (5 minutes):
- To assess students’ understanding, ask them to write a short paragraph about their favorite animal, using capital letters correctly.
- Collect their paragraphs and review them later to gauge their grasp of capitalization using the shift key.
Extensions: - Have students create their own sentences and exchange them with a partner to practice capitalization. - Play an online game or interactive activity that reinforces capitalization skills using the shift key. - Integrate technology by allowing students to practice capitalization using educational apps or typing programs.
