Activity: “Shun Sound Spelling Patterns”
Objective: To reinforce the spelling patterns of the “shun” sound.
Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Word cards with words containing the “shun” sound (e.g., action, caution, mission, tension, etc.) - Sentence strips or small pieces of paper - Scissors - Glue or tape
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin by explaining to the students that they will be focusing on the “shun” sound and its spelling patterns.
- Write the word “action” on the whiteboard or chart paper and ask the students to identify the “shun” sound in the word.
- Discuss other words that contain the “shun” sound, such as caution, mission, tension, etc.
- Word Sort (10 minutes):
- Distribute the word cards to the students.
- Instruct the students to sort the words into different categories based on their spelling patterns for the “shun” sound.
- For example, they can create categories like “-tion,” “-sion,” “-ssion,” and “-cian.”
- Encourage the students to work collaboratively and discuss their reasoning for each word placement.
- Sentence Creation (10 minutes):
- Provide each student with a sentence strip or a small piece of paper.
- Instruct them to choose one word from each spelling pattern category and create a sentence using those words.
- For example, if they choose “action” from the “-tion” category, “mission” from the “-sion” category, “tension” from the “-ssion” category, and “musician” from the “-cian” category, they can create a sentence like: “The musician took action to complete his mission, causing tension among the audience.”
- Sentence Sharing (5 minutes):
- Have the students share their sentences with the class.
- Encourage them to pay attention to the “shun” sound in each word and how it is spelled.
- Word Hunt (10 minutes):
- Give each student a piece of paper and ask them to fold it into four equal sections.
- Instruct them to write one spelling pattern for the “shun” sound at the top of each section (-tion, -sion, -ssion, -cian).
- Set a timer for 5 minutes and have the students search for words in books or other classroom materials that fit each spelling pattern.
- After the time is up, have the students share their findings with the class.
- Wrap-up (5 minutes):
- Review the spelling patterns for the “shun” sound with the students.
- Ask them to reflect on the activity and share any new insights or observations they made about the spelling patterns.
Extension: - Challenge the students to create a short story or poem using as many words with the “shun” sound as possible. - Have the students create flashcards with words containing the “shun” sound and their corresponding spelling patterns. They can use these flashcards for further practice or review.
