Title: Exploring Shapes and Colors

Objective: - To introduce and reinforce basic shapes and colors to special education preschool students. - To enhance fine motor skills through hands-on activities. - To promote social interaction and communication skills through group activities.

Materials: - Various shapes cut out of colored construction paper (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) - Crayons or markers in different colors - Large poster board or whiteboard - Glue sticks - Scissors - Colorful playdough - Shape and color flashcards - Picture books featuring shapes and colors

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Gather the students in a circle and introduce the topic of shapes and colors.
    • Show flashcards of different shapes and colors, asking students to identify them.
    • Explain that today, they will be exploring and learning more about shapes and colors through fun activities.
  2. Circle Time (10 minutes):
    • Display a large poster board or whiteboard with different shapes and colors drawn on it.
    • Point to each shape and color, asking students to name them.
    • Sing a song or play a video about shapes and colors to engage the students.
  3. Shape Collage (15 minutes):
    • Distribute various shapes cut out of colored construction paper to each student.
    • Provide glue sticks and encourage students to create a collage by sticking the shapes onto a piece of paper.
    • Assist students who may need help with cutting or gluing.
  4. Colorful Playdough (15 minutes):
    • Give each student a small ball of playdough in different colors.
    • Instruct them to create different shapes using the playdough.
    • Encourage students to identify the shapes and colors they are using.
  5. Storytime (10 minutes):
    • Read a picture book that focuses on shapes and colors.
    • Pause during the story to ask questions about the shapes and colors mentioned in the book.
    • Encourage students to participate and share their thoughts.
  6. Wrap-up (5 minutes):
    • Review the shapes and colors learned during the lesson.
    • Ask students to name their favorite shape and color from the activities.
    • Provide positive reinforcement and praise for their participation and effort.

Extension Activities: - Play a game of “I Spy” where students take turns describing a shape or color they see in the classroom. - Create a shape and color scavenger hunt, where students search for objects that match specific shapes and colors. - Use shape and color worksheets or coloring pages for additional practice and reinforcement.

Note: This lesson plan can be modified and adapted based on the individual needs and abilities of the special education preschool students.
