Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to identify the main idea of a text.
  2. Students will be able to distinguish between the main idea and supporting details.

Materials:

  • Copy of the text for the main idea lesson
  • Vocabulary list
  • Poster board
  • Chart paper
  • Markers

Procedure:

  1. Begin by introducing the concept of main idea by asking the students what they think the main idea is in a text (If the text has been discussed in a previous lesson, refer to it).
  2. Display the poster board with a definition of “main idea.”
  3. Introduce the text that will be used to find the main idea. Discuss unfamiliar words with the students, using the vocabulary list as a reference.
  4. Hold a discussion with the students to create a general idea of the article. Have them share their opinions and recall any details that may come to mind about the article.
  5. Provide the students with a chart paper divided into two columns labeled “Main Idea” and “Supporting Details.” Ask the students to find the main idea of the text and then share the details that support it.
  6. Allow time for the students to work on their own to complete the chart.
  7. Have the students take turns presenting their charts to the class and have the other students discuss or share thoughts.
  8. End the lesson by having the students summarize in their own words the main idea of the text.
