In chapter 1, Carrie and her brother Nick are evacuated from London during the Second World War. They are sent to the Welsh village of Bartyn Uchaf, where they are taken in by the mysterious Mr Evans and his sister, Auntie Lou. Carrie finds their new life very strange, with fear and distrust towards “townies” and intolerance towards outsiders.
In chapter 2, Carrie and Nick explore their new home, where they gradually begin to make friends. They attend the village school and realise that life in the countryside is different from what they are used to.
In chapter 3, Carrie and Nick learn more about their new home. They discover the truth about their guardians, and the significance of the mysterious “Bent Tree”. They also meet their neighbours, the Kallinskis, who teach them a valuable lesson about prejudice and how it can be overcome.
In chapter 4, Carrie and Nick experience their first Welsh Christmas and explore the surrounding countryside. Carrie also begins to think more deeply about the impact of the war, and the impact it is having on her family back in London.
In chapter 5, Carrie starts to understand the importance of having a home, and of not taking it for granted. She finds herself beginning to accept the new life in Bartyn Uchaf and even begins to enjoy it. Ultimately, Carrie’s War provides the children with an escape from the darkness of war, and a place of sanctuary.
