Hockey was originally played by English-speaking, upper class, white males, but it grew in popularity among francophones in Quebec. The Catholic Church was concerned about assimilation, but hockey became a symbol of resistance for French Canadians. By 1910, Montreal had five professional hockey clubs and teams from Montreal won eight of the first ten Stanley Cups. Hockey became the national game in Quebec and more than two million French Canadians watched hockey by the early 1960s. Even today, Quebec media provides a significant amount of NHL media coverage in North America.
